Semester Wrap-Ups at O’Hill and Newcomb
Congratulations to our Workplace learners and volunteers, who finished their programs at O’Hill and Newcomb last week! We are proud of each and every one of you for a semester full of perseverance and success. We look forward to seeing our learners continue to grow and achieve their goals next fall. Thank you also to our volunteers and interns for your hard work, it is deeply appreciated. We love seeing our Workplace programs come together each week to share, learn, and bond.
Wednesday, May 3rd, 2:00 PM in Garden V Lower
Join VISAS to celebrate the end of the year at our annual Garden Party! Volunteers, interns, and international participants will come together to enjoy light refreshments and conversation in Garden V Lower. The garden is located on the west side of the lawn, closest to Newcomb Hall. We will have plenty of signs posted to help you find your way!
We hope you are able to join us for one of our favorite events. Please fill out the form you received via email to let us know if you will be attending. This form will also allow you to thank your VISAS partners for their work this semester. Hope to see you soon!
Two exciting events coming up next week
VISAS and CAELC invite you to the following events:
Egg-citing Easter Party
When: Wednesday, April 12th, 5:00-7:00 PM
Where: Courtyard between Nau and Gibson Halls, Ground Level
Come dye and hunt Easter eggs with CAELC staff and students and VISAS participants! There will also be light Easter fare and other delicious refreshments. Children and other family members are welcome! (This event will take the place of the scheduled VISAS Café.)
IWL Film Series Presents: The Visitor
When: Thursday, April 13th, 6:30-9:00 PM
Where: Gibson Hall, Room 211
Join us to watch the The Visitor–a 2008 film that explores the struggles and joys of immigration, identity, and cross-cultural communication. When Tarek and Zainab, two immigrants and artists, are tricked into renting an apartment belonging to economics professor Walter Vale, the lives of the three become entangled as they learn from and attempt to understand one another. They begin to discover common dreams and passions as they navigate the complex politics of immigration. Discussion to follow.
Tuesday, March 28th from 4-6 PM at Brody Jewish Center (1824 University Circle)
Challah for Hunger is an awesome organization at UVa that raises money for hunger relief by baking and selling challah, a traditional (and delicious) Jewish bread. VISAS will be going to help bake some challah on March 28th, and we want you to join us!
This will be an awesome opportunity to get to know other VISAS volunteers and participants, cook, chat, and learn about food, all while giving back to the community! This is also a great activity for LC partners to do during the week. If you want to join us, please fill out this short form so we know how many people to expect. We will send a follow-up email with more information.
This is going to be a lot of fun, and we would love to show Challah for Hunger how excited we are to volunteer with them by bringing a large and enthusiastic group! They loved our help last time and are excited to host us again! Email email@example.com with any questions.
Hope to see you there!
Remember to stop by VISAS Café!
Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope everyone had a fun and restful week. VISAS is back this week and we are excited to see you all. Remember to stop by Nau 242 on Wednesday nights from 5-6 for international snacks and conversation at our VISAS Café. Café is a great way to meet new people and talk about anything and everything.
Also, we encourage you to take advantage of the many events going on at U.Va. You can always find the official calendar of events here, which includes lectures, concerts, and sporting events. LC partners are always welcome to attend University events, as long as both partners stay on Grounds! We wish you all the best with the continuing semester, and are always here to help if you need anything.
No VISAS Programs March 4th through 12th
Spring Break is next week! Since many students and staff will be leaving U.Va. for the week, there will be no VISAS programs from Saturday, March 4th through Sunday, March 12th. VISAS Café will not meet on Wednesday the 8th. We hope that everyone has a fun and relaxing break. For any learners wishing to practice during this time, we recommend that you check out our Resources page for some wonderful websites to use. See you soon!
VISAS Café begins tonight, 5-6 PM in Nau 242
All VISAS programs have launched this week! We would like to thank our volunteers for a productive orientation and hope that everyone enjoyed their time at the International Mixer last week.
Tonight, VISAS Café will meet for the first time this semester. Stop by Nau 242 between 5 and 6 PM to enjoy an international snack and some casual conversation. Our intern, Jessie, will be leading a discussion on a new topic each week. Our Café is a fun and easy way to meet new people and talk about everything from current events to funny jokes and stories. Feel free to come for any part of the hour that you can. We hope to see you soon and wish everyone a successful start to their Spring with VISAS.
